Lilli de Rousseau, a Parisian cabaret performer who has been performing as Jean d'Arc on stage, is asked to leave the country by several diplomats who feel she is a distraction to high-level officers. The diplomats provide her with a villa in Italy, and Captain Tonnino as her guardian. In Italy, Lilli is impressed by Lieutenant Roger Craig's reputation as a "Don Juan" and insists on meeting the American. She keeps her identity a secret from Roger, and while luring him into passion, continually puts him off, completely exasperating him. She believes that he has had women all too easily and intends to present him with a challenge. When Lilli reads that her understudy in Paris is getting acclaim for her role, she insists Roger take her there for a drink at the Ritz, although he is unaware that she has been forbidden to return. Risking arrest and his military career, Roger leaves without official permission and flies her to France. Then, when he sees his orderly, Terry, in trouble in another plane as a result of his negligence, he helps Terry land safely outside of Paris. Roger takes Lilli to the Ritz bar, although he is terrified he will be arrested for being absent without leave. Lilli later becomes angry when she sees her negligee laid out next to Roger's pajamas on a hotel bed and rushes out to the theater. Terry, who borrowed Roger's uniform after his own was torn in a brawl in a bar, is arrested for disorderly conduct and impersonating an officer. Lilli sends Roger a note telling him he can find her at the theater, where she is reprising her role as Jean d'Arc. Terry arrives in a new uniform and informs Roger that all charges against him for going absent without leave have been dropped. Roger sees Lilli's hand in this, and after she receives an ovation for her performance, she admits she promised to return to Italy in exchange for the favor, and accepts Roger's marriage proposal.
