Mingret, the director of production, who manages the business, profits from his autonomous position by stealing from time to time. One day, Paul passes by the factory, and Mingret tells him that they are in serious financial trouble and that they must sell the factory in order to avoid a catastrophe. Mingret has masterminded this plot in order to take the factory for himself by finding a fake buyer. A young factory employee, Ginette Cognasse, warns Paul of the plot and tells him not to sign the contract. Paul is very thankful but is incapable of managing the factory himself, so he gives the factory over to Ginette's father, Cognasse. As manager of the employees for many years, Cognasse has been a strong champion for the rights of the proletariat. He tells the workers that a new golden age awaits them, but quickly forgets his promise to his comrades as he becomes arrogant and refuses to listen to their advice, needs and ideas. He eventually realigns with Mingret and one night gives a large costume ball at which he arrives as Napoleon, his new hero. At the ball, Mingret is arrested for his crooked schemes, and Cognasse decides that he is not cut out for the job he has taken and realizes he must follow the example of Napoleon and abdicate. He calls Paul, who has fallen in love with Ginette, and tearing up the contract, returns to him the rights of the company. He then gives Paul Ginette's hand in marriage. The factory, now a cooperative, is manned by a group of personnel who are finally content.
