Badly in debt, Hugh courts and secretly marries Minna Hart, an heiress. When Hugh approaches her father with the news, they fight and Hugh is thrown out of the house before he can reveal his secret. Convinced now that the marriage will not work, Minna demands a separation that night, but the next day, Mr. Hart is found murdered and Hugh is arrested. To protect her reputation, Minna refuses to supply Hugh with the necessary alibi in court. Near conviction, Hugh is saved by Irene, the wife of Gerard, Hugh's devoted childhood friend, who tells the judge she was with Hugh during the hour in question. After the trial, Irene tries to convince Gerard that she lied about Hugh, but he refuses to listen and deserts her. Crushed, Irene is comforted by Hugh, who eventually marries her. Years later, Minna tells Gerard the truth about her marriage, not mentioning Irene's union with Hugh. Gerard locates Irene, but is shocked when he discovers she has wed Hugh and in a fury, he tells Irene about Minna, Hugh's other wife. (The rest of this plot is not known).
