Love Letter examines the fantasies of Basil, an eight-year-old coping with the emotional anxieties triggered by the divorce of her parents. Basil's shifting realities bring about an imaginary friend, a worm she calls Sandy, who has been hibernating in a jar upon the windowsill. In response to her transforming family structure, Basil has developed a symbiotic relationship with the co-dependent worm, which enables her to interpret a hidden love letter from her father to her mother. Through this whimsical consultation and a formal combination of puppetry, animation, magical realism, and live action, Basil regains some notion of love within her changing familial system.
