Sue Gordon lives with her grandmother on the Tennessee side of the Cumberland mountains. Although "Granny" Sue and her old Negro servant Uncle Ned discourage Sue from associating with Shad Peters, whom they consider to be poor white trash, Sue's friendship inspires Shad to get an education in Nashville, but his family, which feuds with the Peytons, would think that he was a coward if he did. When Granny dies, Sue goes to Chicago, to fulfill her grandmother's dying wish, to live with iron manufacturer John Peyton, her mother's early sweetheart. Although Peyton's neighbor, spinster Sophia Smarte, dislikes Sue, she soon ingratiates herself to everyone else, including Peyton's nephew Donald, who backs Peyton's employees in their strike. Sue saves Peyton's life when the strikers come to burn his house. When Sophia spreads stories about Sue, she returns home. Peyton gives in to the strikers' demands to have them help locate Sue. After he finds Sue aiding the wounded Shad in his battle against the Peytons, Peyton, at her urging, offers Shad a position in his firm and ends the feud. Sue then returns and accepts Donald's proposal.
