The end of World War I is celebrated in Paris, London, and New York, but not in the Siberian village of Skzavoskanoff. To protect the village from the Bolsheviks, American Sergeant Chuck Connors, who brags that he fought with Pershing in Mexico, and Private Jimmy Barton continue to fire their machine gun to scare people attempting to enter. After Jimmy discovers Sonia, a princess whose family was killed by the Bolsheviks, hiding in a sack, he hides her in their room. Later she identifies the Cossack General Stavinski, who orders the Americans to abandon the village, as a Bolshevik impostor who executed the real Stavinski. To forestall a Bolshevik attack on the village, which is the key to the whole district, Chuck and Jimmy coerce the timid visiting Iowan high school science teacher, Uriah S. Grant, to impersonate General U. S. Grant, leader of the American reinforcements. While Chuck and Jimmy sing during a celebration to honor Grant, Stavinski's aides abduct Sonia and take the machine gun. When Chuck and Jimmy come to rescue her, Sonia tells them that she is a spy in order to save them, but Jimmy finds a map on which she has scribbled "I love Jimmy" and evidence that the Bolsheviks took the gun. After he and Chuck are arrested, they escape and try to rescue Sonia with the help of her family's servant Ivan, the strongest man in Russia, who breaks through a number of walls. They are captured after a fight and are about to be shot by a firing squad, when Grant, riding up with a group of Cossacks, shoots Stavinski as he trips. An American officer arrives and says that the war ended six months ago. After a goat eats Sonia's ticket to San Francisco, where she and Jimmy plan to marry, Chuck suggests that they marry there, in the village whose name he has not yet learned to pronounce.
