May 24, 1864 ) Joseph Hoover of the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry, promoted to the rank of Corporal but a month ago, sits in the crowded confines of a cattle car. He is surrounded by fellow Union soldiers in this re-purposed prisoner train, heading south on the final leg of their journey to Andersonville Prison, known by the locals as Camp Sumter. Union Bound makes a quick note in his diary, one of the last he will make during his more than four month interment. He finds conditions to be terrible in the camp, and he must hide most of his possessions against the Raiders, a gang of Union soldiers who steal from their fellow prisoners to make things for themselves a little easier. Hoover finds a friend in one Thomas Redway, who helps him guard his belongings against theft and violence. (July 11) Shortly after arriving, he witnesses the hanging of six of these Raiders by the group known as Regulators, formed in response to the Raiders in an attempt to enforce some civility in the camp. His experience from there is to keep his head down, but always aware of some opportunity. Two more months go by, and word begins to spread that Shermans army is coming. The Confederates fear he will liberate the camp, returning nearly forty thousand soldiers to the Unions forces. (Sept 12) Hoover then finds himself on another train, this time headed for the stockade near Florence, SC. Arriving with nearly 600 other prisoners, they find the stockade incomplete, and they are kept in a closely guarded camp in a field next to the train tracks near to where they disembarked the train. He and Thomas spot the nearby hospital, and recognize a lack of guards near the back. They complain of fever and are admitted to this area of the camp. The following morning the two see their opportunity, as the Confederate guards are called away from their post for some emergency (likely an attempted uprising at the other camp). In the confusion, Hoover and Redway seize their opportunity and make a break for it. Their equipment is limited, but they escape into the marsh. As they enter the brackish waters, just beyond sight of the camp, they hear the sounds of dogs barking, and assume that a search party is after them. Quickly, they break off reeds from near the bank and, using them as breathing tubes, submerge themselves in the marsh. Dogs and Confederates splash in nearby, but quickly lose the scent of the men under water. Waiting until long after they last heard the dogs and men, Hoover and Redway cautiously surface as dusk is coming on. They slowly advance through the marsh, bivouacking for the night on a tiny island in the marsh, and continuing in the morning, until they reach the flowing Pee Dee river. They make their way downriver for a ways, discussing their next move. Coming upon the meager slave quarters near a small plantation, they cautiously stop for the night. The slaves are hesitant, but offer the men what they can. Hoover and Redway travel with one of the slaves, setting out at dusk. They travel a ways to another plantation and set of slave quarters. The next morning they take a bath in the river, and continue on their way. (Sept. 25) They come upon a small rowboat, pulled up on the bank. Making sure no one is looking, they untie the boat, and set out to find the Little Pee Dee, a tributary of the larger river that will begin taking them North. (Sept. 26) Hoover and Redway come upon the MacIntoshs Plantation, where they stay in the slaves quarters, but are caught by the widow of the house. She invites them in to the plantation home, remarking how they are poor boys, caught up in this dreadful war. They stay the night in the house, only to be awakened by one of the slaves saying they are in danger. Reluctantly they sneak out, but are spotted by civilian secessionists (MacIntoshs neighbors) on their way up the road, and escape into the woods with the southerners in hot pursuit. The southerners dismount their horses and split up, following them into the woods. Hoover and Redway hide in a small ravine, waiting, and take one of the sons surprise, knocking him unconscious. They take off, and when the rest of their pursuers find the wounded young man, they give up the pursuit, but swear to notify everyone in the county about the Union threat and the escaped slave (Jim Young). (Oct. 1) After a few days with nothing to eat, they come upon another river, and Jim suggests they try fishing. As it has recently rained, the river is running high and fast, and they dont catch much of anything. They follow the river for a couple days, and find another boat.(Oct. 5) They leave the boat and come upon some slaves again. They are given some sweet potatoes. As they are resting in the slave quarters, the masters discover them and hold them at gun-point. Jim distracts him for a moment, and Hoover wrestles the gun away, cracking him on the head with the stock. One of the slave overseers tries to stop them, but he, too, is disabled. He takes off for the house while Hoover and Redway, and Young take off for the river. When they get to the water, they jump in their boat and start paddling hard. They are mid-river when more secessionists arrive at the bank and start firing at them. Hoover jumps at a bullet that skims his jacket, and the boat is overturned. He looses direction in the water, and struggles for the surface, nearly drowning. Ryan clambers for the boat, and Jim has to help Hoover who is drowning. They all grab the boat, keeping it between themselves and their attackers, though they are far out of range anyway. They drag themselves up on the opposite bank, and disappear into the woods, leaving the boat behind. About dark they find a slave shack and come inside. The slaves seem reluctant to help, and their overseer is strangely angry. He agrees to let them in, though he fears for their discovery, which would lead to him getting punished. There is grumbling about Yankee demons. In the morning, they are given directions to a tree on a hill, where another slave will await them to give additional directions. They set off for the next location. They arrive in the afternoon, and with nothing else to do, they wait, falling asleep. Hoover and Redway awaken to a click and two rifles with bayonets hanging inches from their faces. Suddenly, one of the Confederates shudders, and the other turns to see Jim with a hatchet in the others back. He cant back up enough to fire, and Jim jumps on him, choking him with the rifle. Hoover and Redway help him, and gag the man, hoping to get some information from him. They discover the whereabouts of his camp, and their knowledge that this is a meeting place for escaped slaves. The Confederates have killed the one that Hoover and Redway were supposed to meet. Hoover and Redway tie the Confederate up to the tree and leave him, continuing on their way. (Oct. 18) That night they see the fires from the nearby Confederates camp, most likely a company on picket duty. They try to stear clear of them, and continue on, coming to rest themselves near dawn. Only a few hours pass before they are awakened by hounds. Jim is scared nearly to panic. He keeps muttering about how he killed a man. They pack up their camp and continue on. They pass a small village, seeing the smoke from fires on the nearby horizon. They come across a couple other slaves on the road, who give them directions to the next town. They are getting close to New Bern. At the next stop, they hear again about Confederate troops in the area. (Oct. 24) There is a Confederate picket line up ahead, blocking their way. Across the field is the Union picket. They are trapped, and have to make it through. They hear someone coming. He spots Redway. They make a break for it, are fired upon. Union soldiers open fire, distracting the Confederates, and giving Hoover and the rest time to break free. They crowd into a depression left by cannon fire near the field, but are fired upon when they try to advance. They then start shouting at the men in the picket. Something of a stand-off occurs, where the Union men dont believe them, and a couple more shots are fired. Jim panics and nearly takes off running, but Hoover tackles him and talks him down. (Oct. 25) The following day they seek out the commissary where they are issued new uniforms and equipment. They have a quick talk with the officer in command at New Bern, who praises their good sense in escaping and wishing to rejoin their company in Virginia. They offer for Jim to come with them, but instead he refuses, choosing to join other escaped slaves in helping others to freedom. We all might have to do some things we aint proud of, but as long as were doing whats right in the long run.
